Take That have beaten off the best of the US R'n'B scene to claim the top spot in this week's singles chart.

The Greatest Day presented the quartet with one of their finest chart moments as it rose above Beyonce and TI featuring Rihanna to go straight in at number one.

The single is the first from their fifth album Circus, which the band unveiled on Eurostar.

Comeback queen Britney Spears, fresh from her appearance on X Factor, rose two places to number seven with Womanizer.

As for the talent show hopefuls themselves they slipped from two to eight with collective effort Hero.

Pop siblings Same Difference - themselves former X Factor contestants - were the second highest new entrants with their push for Christmas glory with We R One reaching 13.

In another indication of the show's influence on the pop charts, blond-haired former contestant Rhydian entered the album charts at number three, one place above Leona Lewis.

The Salvation Army - whose existence somewhat pre-dates that of Simon Cowell's show - saw their collection of spiritual tunes reach the top 20.

Status Quo, who once famously bragged of being 'in the army now' lagged behind the Christian soldiers, with their greatest hits collection dropping 12 places to 34.
