India's home minister, Shivraj Patil, resigns as anger grows over whether the Mumbai terrorist massacre could have been prevented.

Following Shivraj Patil's resignation, other senior officials may follow, as recriminations grow over whether they ignored evidence that could have prevented the terrorist massacre in Mumbai, as it emerges that the Taj hotel received a warning.

Security's been raised to what has been described as "war level" and new anti-terror laws have been promised.

But after days of bloodshed in Mumbai, the trauma turned to anger today as India's government faced growing questions over why it failed to prevent the attacks that killed 172 people.

The home minister resigned, saying he took "moral responsibility" for the militants' actions that have also raised tensions with neighbouring Pakistan.
